WHERE DOES IT GO WHEN IT JUST FADES AWAY (LIVE) (Marc Nerenberg)
One day, about seven years ago, I was just exploring a banjo tuning that I was not very familiar with, improvising along with my harmonica, and I came up with something I rather liked. So I figured I had better make up some words, or I would just forget what I had been playing. So, I improvised them too, and was somewhat surprised by what came out. The words, no doubt, were very influenced by a conversation I had the day before with my then 89-year-old mother, whose memory was not failing one bit, but who was finding, to her consternation, that nearly everyone around her, at the elderly residence where she lived, seemed to be losing theirs at a startling rate. I recorded the song at the time and then, ironically, forgot all about it. About five years later, I came across that recording, and revived the song. I sort of figured out what I was playing then but it has always remained somewhat improvised, and different every time I play it. This was recorded at a live performance at Montreal’s Yellow Door Coffeehouse.
