about

35 years ago, (in 1985) I went into a studio on an intermittent basis over a couple of months, and put together this children's album, of mostly original songs, multi-tracking all of the songs, using a variety of instruments, and having few other people come in to play or sing in various spots.
I had intended for it to be a vinyl album, and had done the cover art and everything, when I discovered that no one was making vinyl albums anymore. Apparently, I was living in a cave, because I hadn't even noticed.
The only option at the time was cassette. So, reluctantly, I released THAT LION! as a cassette only, and after I sold out the initial run, decided not to make anymore.
A couple of years ago, I realized that I actually had the equipment, when combining an old high quality cassette player with a dolby decoder and a high quality digital recorder, to create a reasonably high quality digital copy of the one remaining cassette that I found on a shelf in my basement and I now have something that sounds reasonably close to the original recordings in all their glory. Those are the tracks that are posted here.
I still have some faint hopes that someday I may yet find someone with access to the outdated equipment needed to digitize the original reel-to-reel masters (on 12" reels, that run at 15 ips, two track stereo, with "Dolby A" coding + tones) but, I admit, those hopes keep diminishing over time. If I ever do find someone, I will replace these tracks with those.

about

Marc Nerenberg Montreal, Québec

Marc Nerenberg is a veteran Montreal folksinger who plays old time banjo styles and blues harmonica. He has a narrative- centric repertoire, recounting stories in song and wrapping stories around songs. You may “be drawn in by a combination of Marc’s mastery of traditional banjo styles, his idiosyncratic singing, and [his] richly detailed ballads.” (Mike Regenstreif – Folk Roots/Folk Branches 2019) ... more
