Lunatics Are Everywhere

from Long Train A-Rollin' by Marc Nerenberg

/

about

Where exactly this song came from is not entirely clear to me - I wrote it in bits and pieces spread over several days, counting syllables, as I went, to make sure each stanza would fit whatever tune I might come up with. Then I fit some music to it and fiddled around for a while until I found a comfortable key and tempo to put across the song sounding like it did in my head. This is the opposite of what I usually do in writing, which is to stumble across a tune when improvising on the banjo, and then making up words to fit it. This time, the last four lines of lyrics entered my head, and I jotted them down and gradually added more lyrics. I have a pretty clear idea of what I think I was writing about here, but the meaning does feel somewhat fluid to me, so you may see something different in it than I do. This was recorded on 7 June 2021, and played, using old time 2 finger picking style, on a banjo tuned gFCFA (taking into account the position of the capo at the 5th fret), along with a B♭ harmonica played cross-keyed in F.
