Long Train A-Rollin'

from Long Train A-Rollin' by Marc Nerenberg

/

about

This is one of my self-penned songs that seem to have simply written themselves. I started out with a fairly generic opening line about a train, and then just concentrated on coming up with rhymes and using those rhymes in lines that fit the meter. Somehow, seemingly unbidden, this dark song emerged from that process - drawn out of my subconscious, I suppose.
The banjo/vocal track was recorded on 21 July 2021, and the harmonica track was added on 23 July 2021. The banjo was played using mainly two finger picking, with passages of clawhammer interspersed here and there, and it was tuned to an open Cm chord: gCGCE♭. I used a B♭ harmonica in “3rd position” to play in Cm.
